Yamaha MG20XU - Ready for Live and Studio!

Yamaha has always aimed to offer its customers as pure and uncolored a sound as possible when developing audio equipment, leaving the mixing engineer all doors open. While coloration might sometimes sound appealing, it imposes a clear direction on the mix that strongly limits the producer’s creative freedom. Naturally, the MG series was developed strictly according to Yamaha’s conviction. It follows the philosophy that sound should above all be pure and transparent like a mountain stream. Therefore, these mixers deliver a clarity of sound that has not been seen before in this class.
The MG series includes numerous models with 6 to 20 channels, suitable for many different tasks. The intuitive user interface, robust construction, high sound quality, and flexible design of these reliable consoles are unrivaled in the compact class, ensuring that nothing stands in the way of creating outstanding mixes.

D-PRE (Discrete Class-A Mic Preamps)
Preamps are the starting point for great sound. If their quality isn’t sufficient, no great mix can be achieved, no matter how hard the engineer tries. In other words: the foundation for the mix’s quality is set here. MG series mixers feature Yamaha’s studio-grade, discrete Class-A preamps. They use an inverted Darlington circuit, which, thanks to a so-called dual-transistor cascade, delivers more power at lower impedance. D-PRE amps provide a fat, natural bass and silky highs with extremely low distortion.
Thanks to their wide and very balanced frequency response, the preamps handle all conceivable signal sources without overemphasizing any frequency range. This clean sonic foundation saves you time and effort, as extensive EQ adjustments or other sound corrections to fix the mix become unnecessary.

Operational Amplifiers for Highest Sound Quality
The preamp determines sound quality, while the operational amplifier ICs are among the most important components of the preamp. The MG series features new, high-quality, custom-made MG01 operational amplifiers developed in close collaboration with the semiconductor manufacturer. While many other op-amps optimize circuit design and efficiency, Yamaha prioritizes sound quality, so off-the-shelf chips were not an option.
The MG01 op-amps have redesigned circuits where internal components and wiring are perfectly matched. Of course, very pure materials like high-purity silicon wafers and copper wires were used, so every single chip component contributes to outstanding resolution.

Switchable Phantom Power and PAD Switch
Thanks to switchable phantom power, MG series consoles allow connection of condenser microphones with all their advantages over dynamic mics, including extended frequency response, much higher dynamics, and better sound quality. Mono input channels with PAD switches accept mic and line level signals. The PAD button attenuates high-level input signals, for example, mic’d instruments during a concert that might otherwise cause clipping and seriously damage the mix.
Our Mixer - Your Sound
Do you have a favorite song where the guitar sounds perfect without EQ or the vocals need no processing? Probably not. Yamaha mixers are known for their linear reproduction and sonic purity, but usually, alongside perfectly recorded instruments or vocals, a little extra is needed to achieve a truly professional-sounding mix. Many tools originally from Yamaha’s high-end consoles are now found in the MG series. These mixers have everything you need to produce a distinctive, professional-quality sound.

One-Button Compressors
Compression plays a key role in almost every studio production or live sound setup. By skillfully controlling the dynamics of audio signals with a compressor, you can create punchier basslines, tighter snares, more present vocals, or thicker live guitar walls. However, mastering even simple hardware compressors can take countless hours. Yamaha’s innovative one-button compressors allow optimal adjustment with just a single knob.

EQ and High-Pass Filter
There’s nothing better than a reliable equalizer when you want to finely shape the sound. The MG series benefits from Yamaha’s unparalleled experience in audio device construction. All mono channels feature excellent 3-band EQs for precise sound control. Additional high-pass filters allow removal of unwanted low-frequency noise like footfalls, making the mix noticeably clearer and cleaner.

AUX / Effect Sends / Groups
MG series mixers feature AUX sends to expand your PA or studio setup. These can be used to add extra effects, route outputs to external recording devices, or feed a monitoring system. The main mix also has its own send controls. The MG06 / 06X and MG10 / 10XU models have only one stereo mix bus. All other models additionally offer one or two stereo group buses with corresponding outputs for convenient channel grouping. Next to all channel faders, switches allow clear group assignment.

Numerous Input and Output Connections
All models feature high-quality, balanced Neutrik XLR connectors on mono channels. Stereo channels also have XLR jacks. Mono inputs are combo jacks accepting both mic and line level. Two stereo inputs have one XLR and two jack connectors. The XLR accepts mic-level signals, while the jacks are for line level. Mono or stereo line signals can be fed (except on the 10-channel model). The other two stereo channels vary by model: on the 20-channel model, the XLR accepts mic level, while two RCA connectors handle mono or stereo line signals.
Models with 16 and 12 channels accept stereo line signals via two jack connectors. Each stereo channel also has 2TR RCA jacks as independent inputs for external sources like CD players. The 10-channel model has an additional stereo channel with a pair of jack connectors for line signals. On XU models, any USB input source can be assigned to one of the stereo channels. Besides the main stereo outputs (XLR L/R, jack L/R), MG mixers have numerous outputs for groups (jack), AUX/FX (jack), monitor (jack L/R), and headphones (stereo jack). The main outputs can be used for monitoring or mastering.

Internal SPX Digital Effects
Effects add polish and professionalism to any mix, with or without music. MG-X/-XU models feature Yamaha’s globally respected SPX digital multi-effect processor, offering 24 editable premium digital effects perfect for enhancing your mix. Whether adding depth to a speech or freshening a live concert, the excellent reverb and delay realistically and naturally improve the mix’s spatial impression.

Metal Housing
The MG series is built to last, featuring a solid, powder-coated metal housing of outstanding build quality. The design optimally supports internal convection cooling, while the power supply is cleanly separated from the analog circuits inside, preventing interference noise and extending component life. Additionally, forces like pressure or pull on the controls don’t directly affect the circuit board or electronics but are absorbed by the sturdy housing, greatly enhancing reliability and durability.
XLR Connection
The main stereo mix outputs use professional XLR connectors. Their locking mechanism prevents accidental disconnection and guarantees stable signal transmission even under the toughest conditions.

USB Audio Interface with 2 Inputs and 2 Outputs in 24-Bit/192 kHz Resolution
MG series mixers have digital connections, allowing direct and easy playback of digital material through the mixer. USB supports not only PCs but also Apple devices iPhone and iPad (2 and newer) via Apple’s "Lightning to USB Camera" adapter. The USB protocol uses asynchronous data transfer. Audio data receives highly precise timing from the MG mixer, enabling recordings and playback in excellent quality.
Fits Your Ear, Stays on Your Head - For Those Who Like It Comfortable & Professional!
The KH-238 delivers a full, balanced sound with rich bass and clear highs. It offers plenty of volume yet precise and clear stereo imaging.
Of course, the soft-padded, wide headband is length adjustable. Each side has 12 steps for optimal fit. For even more comfort, the ear cups are mounted on two-axis pivots. The thick, soft padding of the circumaural cups also provides good external noise isolation.
The integrated volume control in the cable is always at hand, simplifying use with PCs or mp3 players. The 3.5 mm stereo jack offers excellent transmission, and a 6.3 mm stereo jack adapter is included.
